Have you ever asked yourself...
"What
is my Soul purpose?"
If so, you are not
alone.
Not too long ago, the question
on people's minds might have been, "Is there a purpose to
my life?" Now, the focus seems to have shifted. We know
there is a purpose to our existence and we want to know what
it is.
One powerful way to connect with your Soul purpose, is to begin
understanding what your Soul purpose is not. Here are
4 common misconceptions:
Misconception #1:
Earth is a school and my Soul is here to learn "lessons"which
are a sort of punishment for not having learned it the "last
time."
Right here, right now,
let's PLEASE retire the dreary concept of Soul "lessons."
It's not the idea of learning I object to. The fact is your
Soul loves to learn - that's what Souls do! However, if you
didn't enjoy school as a child, the idea of being here to learn
lessons in "Earth School" may seem boring, dismal,
or even frightening.
Beginning now, I invite you to consider that your Soul is here
on Earth, (voluntarily, by the way) not to learn "lessons",
but to work on "projects". Your Soul is busy, tinkering,
learning, laughing and growing.
Perhaps your Soul is engaged
in a project on patience, or forgiveness. If so, imagine what
kinds of situations your Soul may cleverly have arranged for
you! Perhaps your Soul is interested in learning about the thrill
of adventure, or the challenge of teamwork, or the experience
of solitude. From your Soul's perspective, every single experience
you have ever had is useful and a source of continuing Self-enrichment.
Misconception #2:
My Soul purpose will be revealed to me in the form of a job description.
Not necessarily! To be fair,
this misconception probably sprang from the very useful concept
of service, or "right livelihood." I gently invite
you to widen your idea of what having an occupation might look
like.
Imagine there are two generic
types of Souls: The Specialist and the Generalist. The Soul
Path of a Specialist may indeed revolve around a job or a specific
activity. Think of Tiger Woods. We all know someone who is
a "born teacher," a "born artist," or a "born
mother." Specialist Souls like these tend not to ponder
their purpose. They're too busy just doing it!
Generalist Souls have a different
approach, pursuing their purpose in a variety of settings. Not
limited to a specific activity, the Generalist Soul often does
its work quietly and anonymously. It may be a Generalist at
work when someone takes an extra moment to smile at a harried
ticket counter clerk, or returns the extra change given by the
same clerk.
But Soul purpose may rest in something even more intangible.
For example, a Soul may serve to focus a frequency of Love in
a place where it is desperately needed. And this may happen
during dream-time, without any conscious awareness at all!
Misconception #3:
You can only connect with your Soul by thinking "spiritual
thoughts and doing "spiritual things".
Nonsense! Remember, you
are not a human being having a spiritual experience, but a spiritual
being having a human experience. Your Soul connects with you
through all things human.
What things do you really
love to do? What excites your passion? Do you love horses,
movies, music, sports, needlepoint? It might be something very
humble. In one stunning example, Oprah Winfey recently described
a woman who loved to "pop zits" when she was a child.
Today she is a gifted and highly successful facialist who specializes
in "extractions." This is her Soul path.
Or we can return to the example
of Tiger Woods. Tiger is obsessed with knocking the heck out
of a little white ball. He has made a fortune hitting the thing
into a little hole, a seemingly meaningless act. Yet Tiger Wood's
Soul Purpose shines through and inspires millions of people.
Misconception #4:
You must consciously know your Soul purpose in order to "achieve"
it.
The
simple Truth is, you are never far from your Soul's purpose.
You have always been on your Soul Path.
I have a friend named Doris,
a nurse. The doctor she assists performs the medical procedure,
but it is Doris who exudes a healing energy. Her mere presence
in a room is a comfort. When she takes your hand, fear and anxiety
just melt away. This ability comes naturally to Doris, and what's
more, she is quite unconscious of it. She would never describe
herself as a healer. In fact she would be embarrassed to be
called one. Yet a healer is what she is, in the Soul of her
very Being.
If you want to become more
connected with your Soul, simply trust that it is at work, and
let it take the lead. Begin to consider every moment
of every day as an opportunity for Soul work. As you do, you
will realize even the smallest action becomes another step in
the unfolding journey of your Soul.
